Golden Hour at Chinsegut Hill Retreat and Conference Center

Photo composition can sound intimidating, but it’s actually not so bad. We have all heard the expression “beauty is in the eye of the beholder;” and, it’s true, and it is a simple way to think about composing your photos. Plan the time of day around sundown or sun up if possible — when its “golden hour” — and the natural sunlight is beautiful. Even gloomy or overcast days can give your photos a dramatic look and feel! Most visitors at Chinsegut Hill Retreat and Conference Center are shooting the beautiful landscapes or wildlife, so we have put together some tips to assist you in getting the perfect, post-worthy shot.

A few easy ways to change your perspective:

  • Get higher up: Shoot from a higher perspective.
  • Get lower: Shoot from a lower perspective, even laying down, for a unique ground perspective.
  • Frame your subject with the natural surroundings.
  • Shoot in landscape and portrait orientations. If you’re using a mobile phone turn it on its side.
  • Check your exposure settings to make sure your photo is not too bright or too dark.
  • Switch up your lenses, if you have the option.
  • Change your overall point of view (get closer when possible).

Don’t forget the little things…

Macro photography can open up a whole new world for any photographer. There is an entire little world just waiting to be seen and photographed. The texture and patterns in nature are everywhere, if you’re looking. Notice the little ant seemingly climbing its way to the sun?
